Touch the world of family crest art. “En to Sen -Kyogen no Kiseki-” is now being held.

2024.12.06

En to Sen – KYOGEN no Kiseki – Hatoba Shoryu and Hatoba Yoho,” by two designers of Kyogen, a family crest design company, is currently on view at “BAG-Brillia Art Gallery-” until January 12, 2025.

Family crests have been handed down in Japan since ancient times as a symbolic mark of a family. Kyogen was founded in Kyobashi in 1910 as a “mon-noriya,” a craftsman who takes care of the process of drawing family crests on kimonos.

This exhibition looks back on the history of Kyogen, and displays works by Hatoba Shoryu , the third generation Kyogen master, and his son, Hatoba Yoho, who are both artisans who hand-paint family crests on kimonos.

Large-scale artwork featuring the family crests of “dragon” and “phoenix” representing Hatoba Shoryu and Hatoba Yoho, father and son, with drum tacks.

Hatoba and his son have created their own technique, “Mon-Mandala (®︎ Mon-Mandala),” which combines the traditional way of drawing family crests using only circles and lines with digital technology, and has introduced new expressions using family crests to the world.

Kyogen’s designs have been used for various brands such as clothing accessories and labels, and some of these collaborations and original works will be exhibited and sold at this exhibition.

Also, events such as workshops and talk events for children are scheduled to be held during the exhibition period. Come and experience the world of family crest art, a fusion of traditional design and modern sensibilities.
