A Thorough Guide to the Sanno Festival
Hie Shrine’s Sanno Matsuri, one of the three major festivals in Japan, will be held once every two years in 2026.
The festival culminates on June 12 (Fri.) through 14 (Sun.) as the “Tenka Matsuri,” a festival that carries on the traditions of Edo period to the present.
The Yaesu, Kyobashi and Nihonbashi areas, in particular, will be the most exciting stage during the event.
The festival begins with the Shinkosai, a 300-meter procession of imperial carriages, portable shrines, and floats that gracefully parade down Chuo-dori Avenue, lined with modern buildings. The procession crossing over the Nihombashi Bridge is truly a beautiful sight like a picture scroll from the Edo period.
The climax of the festival is the Shimo-machi Rengo Togyo, or the “Downtown Rengo Togyo” on the last day of the festival.
The finale of the festival is a spectacular portable shrine procession. More than a dozen portable shrines gather from various town councils in the Nihonbashi and Kyobashi areas. The sight of all the portable shrines moving toward the Nihonbashi Bridge with their lively shouts is so dynamic that it shakes the entire city.
For three special days, the “chic” of the historic downtown area and the “energy” of the ever-evolving city center will be fused together. Please come and experience the passionate pulse that has continued since the Edo period.
