The charm of the Yaesu, Nihonbashi, and Kyobashi area is that you can find delicious food from both Japan and abroad, and you can choose a restaurant according to your purpose and mood. GOKINJYO, a community of women workers in this area, introduces their favorite dishes in this relay series.
It was a weekday when I had to take a day off due to personal matters. After running errands, I decided that I wanted to do something I could only do on weekdays. I decided to go to a curry restaurant that a fellow GOKINJYO member had told me about! There was a rumor on the Internet that it was a popular restaurant with a long line even on weekdays, but it was past 4:00 p.m. It’s halfway through the day, neither noon nor night…maybe it would be open now?
I headed for TOKYO CURRY QUARTET, a curry area in Yaetica, an underground shopping mall directly connected to Tokyo Station, where four stores are lined up.
Only a few people were alone at this time of the day. The restaurant, with its open kitchen, had a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere with just the right amount of liveliness and calmness. It was the perfect time to take a break.
The restaurant has less than 20 seats at the counter and tables. It is cozy, but the colorful chairs give a bright impression. The atmosphere is one in which one can enter without hesitation, and even before the food arrives, one feels a bit like a traveler. I opened the menu, thinking that one day I would like to visit the real India. I heard that light snacks can be ordered in the evening, so I fantasized about having a drink on my way home from work next time.
This time we ordered the Biryani Meals Plate. The plate is packed with South Indian staples, including a choice of two curries, basmati rice, biryani, chicken tikka, raita, papad, achar, and a subji made with seasonal vegetables (lotus root and potato on this day). The beautifully colored dishes are a sight to behold.
From six types of curry (Chef’s Curry / Butter Chicken / Goa Seafood / Lamb Keema / Daltadka / Palak Paneer), we selected “Goa Seafood” and “Lamb Keema”. The Goa is exquisite with the mildness of coconut milk and the flavor of seafood. The lamb keema has a guttural flavor of lamb, and both go well with rice and biryani!
The “raita,” which I had previously mistaken for dessert at another restaurant and left until the end, was properly utilized this time. The menu explained that “when eaten with biryani or curry, it softens the spiciness,” and I enjoyed it to the end, convincingly tucking it in between.
The drink is Godfather, an Indian beer. It has a solid richness and weight, perfect for spicy food. However, it has a slightly high alcohol content of 7%, so be careful not to drink too much.
In addition to the easy accessibility of the restaurant, which is directly connected to Tokyo Station, the food is highly satisfying. I recommend this restaurant for both date night and solo dining. I felt the breeze of South India and my heart and stomach were fully satisfied.
