Relaxing time for adults at the scotch bar ”COFFEE & WHISKY BAR Islay ” known only to those in the know.

In the area of Yaesu, Nihonbashi, and Kyobashi (the YNKs), you can find many adults who know genuineness in various fields ranging from food, clothing, and housing to hobbies and jobs. This is an illustrated essay expressing the “taste” of those towns, created by an illustrator Chie Sasaki.
The sixth episode is about my extraordinary experience at “COFFEE & WHISKY BAR Islay” which is run by a master who is fascinated by lslay Whiskey.

When I was a child, I thought that all adult stories such as miraculous encounters between man and woman, complaints about work with colleagues, love counseling with master, and grumble about being dumped would be unfolded at people’s favorite bar.

In fact, now I’m old enough to know that such a thing is only a drama story, but having a favorite bar is still an adult’s taste!

So, hearing that there is a bar in the YNKs where you can drink home roasted coffee during the day and special whiskey at night, I went there on my way from work with Ms. S, the editor in charge.

The shop is on the second floor of slim tall building, and the entrance is right in front when you get off the elevator. I got a little nervous…

As soon as you step in, you can be sure that it is a good bar! When Mr. Tateda, the master, was young, he became addicted to a bar in Shibuya where he use to work as an IT. He then opened a bar on the first floor of a building in Ginza while still working as IT.

After eight years of wondering how people can enjoy alcohol slowly, he decided to open the bar on the second floor of a building, for reservation only, so that customers could enjoy drinks in a relaxed atmosphere.

He focused on four elements to create the bar so special;

The unusual

The décor

The lighting

The music

Of course, he is also very particular about purchasing whiskey! In recognition of this, the bar is one of the few to be certified as an official embassy of the Scottish Ardbeg distillery.

From the moment I entered the bar to the moment I got to my first glass of whiskey, I was overflowed with questions I wanted to ask Mr. Tateda. (and I asked them all)

Born in 1779, the whiskey from the Bowmore Distillery, the oldest distillery on Islay, appears proudly in front of you in the perfect lighting, illuminating its best amber color!

This counter was a runway for the whiskey.

When I go to Okinawa, I drink Awamori, and I also enjoy tasting whiskey at a whiskey

distillery tour, but I usually drink beer at home and wine or sake when I go out, which is

basically the only brewed sake I have ever had!

It was the first time in my life that I had a whiskey on the rocks from the first drink. And it’s a distinctive Islay whiskey!

You can enjoy the changes in aroma and taste slowly and carefully with your mouth and nose, and the intoxication is just right.

It is like a friend who gradually shortens the distance and the more you know, the closer you

become. The whiskey is accompanied by Tateda’s original peat-smoked nuts and cheese and high-

cacao chocolate from Minimal, a popular store with its main store in Tomigaya.

This is the best way to highlight the flavor of whiskey! The original smoked nuts & cheese in particular were so good that I bought a large batch for home and friends.

According to Mr. Tateda, you are welcome to come to the bar anytime…

before dinner,

after dinner,

for rendez-vous,

even alone,

and even if you can’t drink alcohol.

He would not talk to people who would not want him to, and would leave them alone. I made a reservation immediately after this interview and revisited.

I learned, in YNKs, a city of adults, how adults drink alcohol and how to go to bars.
