Dancer and Rocaille Armchair with Black Background,” from the new collection, and other Matisse works painted in his studio.
2025.01.08
The Ishibashi Foundation Collection Selection Special Corner Exhibition: Matisse’s Atelier” is currently being held at the Artison Museum in Kyobashi, Tokyo, until February 9, 2025 (Sun.).
The Musee d’Artizon houses a large collection of modern Western paintings. One of the most important artists in this collection is Henri Matisse (1869-1954), known as the “Magician of Color” and one of the most important French painters of the 20th century. This exhibition commemorates the Musee d’Artizon’s new acquisition of Matisse’s “Dancer and Rocaille Armchair, Black Background” (1942).
Throughout his life, Matisse painted many interior paintings, and especially from the 1940s onward, his “studio” played an important role as a place where life and creation were connected. This exhibition features several works from the Ishibashi Foundation’s collection and explores the role of the studio in Matisse’s creative process.
