The Yaesu, Nihonbashi, and Kyobashi areas are full of adults who know the real thing, from food, clothing, and housing to hobbies and work. Illustrator Chie Sasaki will introduce you to the “chic” of this area in this illustrated essay.
In this first installment, we visit “World Antique Book Plaza” on the third floor of Maruzen Nihonbashi, which sells used Western books, to learn how to enjoy antique books.
In conclusion, I would have liked to have listened to more stories even though the interview lasted more than two hours!
It was such a space.
As the name suggests, the store is a collection of “old books” from around the world, located on the third floor of the Maruzen Nihonbashi store.
The day before the interview, I was a little worried about what kind of interview I would be able to do as I am neither a voracious reader nor an expert on antiquarian books…
This is not good! Too much fun and too bottomless to forget the coverage…
Terabytes of knowledge capacity! Mr. Seki, a walking dictionary, gives detailed explanations of each one, so that even I, with no knowledge, can see the stories in the paper and want to listen to all of them and go around.
In addition to the above, the 19th century British art magazine the DOME, one of a limited edition of 425 illustrated books based on Tsuguharu Fujita’s watercolors, and The New Yorker magazine from the 1930s, are all precious and eye-opening and keep the happiness meter swinging.
One of the most amazing things was that the most luxurious and expensive book in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, “Lord Berry’s Beautiful Verses,” a limited edition of 980 copies, was on sale for 1,000,000 yen, a “special inventory price! I have no idea whether it is cheap or expensive, and some books bug my brain for a moment.
Mr. S, the person in charge who accompanied me for the interview, has been living in the publishing and editing industry for a long time.
Something seemed to overflow as he kept looking at old books that were also luxury items and crafts.
It’s heartbreaking to see something that has been seriously created by a professional, and if you are in the profession of creating something, you need to pull that emotion out of your heart on a regular basis.
You don’t have to go to a local world heritage site or an unknown country across the sea to experience that here in Nihonbashi!
The world of antiquarian books, which at first glance seemed to be a difficult place to enter.
The store offers everything from old maps to picture books for souvenirs, and even book collection slips that can be had for as little as 1,000 yen, so there are sure to be encounters that will appeal to book lovers and adults of all genres, including design, fashion, editing, travel, and art.
All of the antique books sold at World Antique Book Plaza are imported, so they are basically in foreign languages.
Therefore, it is difficult to understand the contents of the books, but you can enjoy the beauty of the bindings! Enjoy the illustrations by famous authors! Or you can enjoy the texture of the rare paper!
I learned that you can spend a rich time using all five senses as if you were enjoying art.
I’m not the main character in the movie, but I’m sure I’ll get many ideas and hints.
